Late Filing Penalties
CRA penalties add up fast. Here is what happens when you miss the deadline.
5% Late Filing Penalty
Charged on unpaid taxes if you file after the deadline. Applied to the balance owing on filing date.
1% Per Month Additional Penalty
An additional 1% per month (up to 12 months) charged on the unpaid balance after the initial 5% penalty.
Repeated Failure: 10% + 2%/month
If CRA issued a formal demand to file and you filed late in prior years, the penalty doubles to 10% + 2% per month.
Interest on Balance Owing
CRA charges compound daily interest on any unpaid balance, starting May 1. The rate changes quarterly but is typically 8–10%.
